If an elderly person is home alone and starts to suffer from a stroke, there are warning signs that can enable them to call for help before it’s too late. If they feel these following four symptoms, it’s important they use a medical alert system to get the help they need.
Vision Trouble
One of the most telling symptoms that someone is having a stroke is vision trouble. If all of a sudden a person is having trouble seeing their television or they feel that their eyesight is somewhat blurred, they may be experiencing the early stages of a stroke. The onset can seem to come out of nowhere, which can be somewhat unnerving. If their vision problems won’t go away and they start to experience other symptoms, then it’s important they use their medical alert system right away.
Facial Droop
The Mayo Clinic notes that partial paralysis is another telltale sign that someone is experiencing a stroke. One may develop a symptom called facial droop, where one side of their face is paralyzed while the other is not. If they look in a mirror and they try to smile, its easy to tell whether or not they’re experiencing facial droop. If they experience this symptom, it’s important to get help right away.
Numbness & Tingling
According to WebMD, one may start to feel tingling and numbness in their legs and arms, before they have a stroke. This tingling will probably persist and won’t go away easily, making it an easy to catch the warning sign. This symptom can also be indicative of a heart attack, so it’s something that one cannot ignore. The numbness in one’s extremities can make it hard to move, which makes getting help a time sensitive issue.
Confusion
If one is having trouble concentrating or focusing on even the most basic of tasks, such as opening a door, then that person may be having a stroke. However, this symptom can be associated with any number of other medical problems. If one feels confused and starts to have vision problems or if one starts to feel numbness and tingling in their extremities, then it’s time to call for help.
There are a number of symptoms associated with stroke, which can give one an early warning sign that they may be having a medical emergency. If one is having any of the aforementioned symptoms, be sure to use a medical alert system before it’s too late.
